When do you need a permit?
Any employer who employs someone with a nationality other than Surinamese (a foreign national) must be in possession of a work permit. A work permit is granted by the Director of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Youth Affairs (Ministry of AW&J).
You do not need a work permit when an employer employs a foreign national belonging to one of the following categories:
- Foreigner married to a Surinamese
- Remigrant of Surinamese origin;
- Foreign national with refugee status;
- Foreigner who will be employed as a servant;
- Foreigner with the status of Caricom competent citizen;
- Foreign nationals with a PSA card do NOT need a work permit.

The Ministry of Labor, Employment and Youth considers it necessary, in order to further implement Article 4 paragraph 4 of the Aliens Work Permit Act (S.B. 1981 no.162 as last amended) by S.B. 2001 no. 23), to protect foreign workers on the Surinamese labor market, partly in the context of being able to participate actively in the labor market, to
introduce the Basic Language Knowledge and Society Test in order to improve foreign nationals to comply with the minimum communication skills.
